Ozempic and Wegovy may have an unexpected mental health benefit

According to new research from Griffith University, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs), commonly used to treat diabetes and support weight loss, may also confer mental health benefits, particularly for individuals with bipolar disorder. The study, led by Professor Mark Taylor, analyzed nationwide Swedish data from nearly 15,000 people with bipolar disorder who had been prescribed GLP-1 medications over a 15-year period. The findings indicate that semaglutide (brand names Ozempic and Wegovy), a type of GLP-1 medication, was associated with a 21 percent lower risk of psychiatric hospitalization among these individuals compared to periods when they were not taking GLP-1 medicines.

The researchers suggest that GLP-1 signaling may protect the brain by reducing inflammation, cellular stress, and other biological processes linked to bipolar disorder, potentially contributing to greater mood stability and a lower risk of relapse. However, the study notes that this beneficial effect was specific to semaglutide; other GLP-1 medications such as liraglutide and dulaglutide were not associated with a reduced risk of psychiatric hospitalization, indicating that the potential mental health benefits may not extend across the entire drug class. Professor Taylor expressed hope that these findings will prompt further investigation through randomized controlled trials to provide stronger evidence regarding semaglutide’s impact on psychiatric outcomes in people with bipolar disorder.
