X, the social network owned by Elon Musk, announced on Wednesday that all U.S. creator payouts will now be processed through its proprietary payments service, X Money, effective immediately. This change encompasses payouts from both X’s Original Content Rewards Program and creators’ subscription revenues, as stated in an update shared on the platform. The transition to X Money offers creators instant access to their earnings, eliminating the previous two-week processing cycle and the $30 minimum payout threshold imposed by the former Stripe-powered system.
The announcement suggests that X is mandating the use of X Money for U.S. creators, leaving no alternative payout method for those who may have preferred the previous Stripe-based system. A representative from X confirmed that the change is compulsory for U.S. creators, while international creators will continue to receive payments via Stripe. This shift aligns with X’s broader strategy to transform the platform into an “everything app,” as evidenced by the recent retirement of the Creator Revenue Sharing Program in favor of the Original Content Rewards Program, which places greater emphasis on original content. Additionally, X Money users who receive creator payouts will have those amounts count toward the direct deposit requirements necessary to qualify for a higher annual percentage yield (APY) rate.
