Uber has announced plans to lay off approximately 3,300 employees, representing about 10% of its global workforce, as part of a restructuring initiative aimed at streamlining management layers and reallocating resources toward core divisions such as ridesharing, delivery, and robotaxi services. The decision, communicated by CEO Dara Khosrowshahi in an internal email, also includes a reduction of managerial positions by 20%, with some former managers transitioning to individual contributor roles.
The restructuring further entails a 50% reduction in teams consisting of one or two members and the elimination of positions more than seven layers removed from the CEO. Uber is consolidating its engineering, science, and delivery divisions, as well as integrating delivery operations across restaurants, retail, and direct divisions. Additionally, the company is significantly curtailing remote work options, permitting less than 1% of its staff to work remotely. Khosrowshahi attributes the need for these changes to the complexity and fragmentation that have arisen from Uber’s growth and expansion into new businesses. Source
