Amazon has introduced a new AI-driven feature within its Alexa for Shopping service to assist customers in identifying potential scam messages. According to the company, approximately 360,000 customers annually contact Amazon’s customer service to verify the authenticity of messages they receive, purportedly from Amazon. The AI system leverages Amazon’s extensive database of sent messages—billions in total—to analyze various attributes such as sender information, content, timing, and metadata, enabling it to definitively confirm whether a communication originated from Amazon’s systems.
This initiative builds upon Amazon’s previous efforts to combat scams, which include the introduction of the email address verify@amazon.com and an online form for reporting suspicious messages. The AI’s effectiveness is expected to improve over time as more customers report dubious communications, enhancing its ability to detect fraudulent messages. The enhancement of Alexa for Shopping reflects Amazon’s strategic shift towards utilizing the assistant for shopping-related inquiries and proactive customer support, complementing existing functionalities such as personalized deal sourcing and AI-generated product overviews.
