The Pentagon has introduced customized versions of OpenAI’s ChatGPT and xAI’s Grok, named ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government, respectively, to provide 3 million civilian and military personnel with generative AI tools tailored to “warfighter needs.” These tools are now part of GenAI.mil, a secure portal launched last year, which initially offered Google Gemini and aims to grant Department of Defense employees access to commercial frontier AI models without transmitting sensitive government data through consumer channels. The military versions are exempt from the data collection practices common in consumer tech products.
GenAI.mil has already onboarded over 1.7 million unique users out of the Department of Defense’s 3 million personnel. The addition of ChatGPT Mil and Grok for Government underscores the Pentagon’s broader initiative to leverage AI tools to enhance operational efficiency and maintain a competitive edge while ensuring security. The Pentagon’s collaboration with various tech companies, including Amazon Web Services, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Reflection AI, further emphasizes its commitment to bolstering AI capabilities. Notably, the absence of Anthropic’s Claude model is attributed to a dispute with the Pentagon over the company’s refusal to grant unrestricted use of its AI tools, leading to a supply-chain risk designation by the Trump administration, which Anthropic is currently contesting in court.
