Elon Musk has announced that SpaceX is constructing a secret foundry in Bastrop, Texas, aimed at manufacturing turbine blades and vanes to accelerate the production of natural gas turbines, which are essential for supplementing solar power in AI infrastructure. Musk claims this in-house casting capability could bring gas turbines online up to 18 months faster, addressing a critical bottleneck in the industry. The shortage of gas turbine production capacity, driven by surging demand from AI infrastructure providers, has prompted major tech companies to invest in private gas-fired plants alongside data centers to ensure reliable power supply.
However, the expansion of gas turbine usage raises significant environmental and health concerns. In Memphis, where SpaceXAI operates gas turbines for its Colossus data centers, the NAACP has accused the company of running turbines without proper permits and pollution controls, leading to increased emissions of harmful pollutants like formaldehyde. Similar issues are emerging in other regions, such as Virginia’s “Data Center Alley,” where studies estimate that emissions from gas turbines could cause premature deaths and substantial health-related damages, disproportionately affecting marginalized communities. Thus, while Musk’s initiative may alleviate a production bottleneck, it concurrently exacerbates pollution challenges and legal disputes.
