The company has developed a suite of autonomous equipment for mining, including haul trucks, drilling and underground loaders, dozers, and remote-controlled construction machinery, complemented by software tools such as a command center, fleet management systems, and remote terrain intelligence. Caterpillar’s CTO, Jaime Mineart, highlighted that the company is now applying these learnings to more dynamic environments like job sites, quarries, and construction sites.

One of Caterpillar’s AI applications is the Cat AI Assistant, which enables field technicians to use voice commands to access repair procedures, troubleshoot issues, and identify necessary parts. This tool utilizes the company’s extensive proprietary data, encompassing information from approximately 1.6 million connected assets worldwide and over 16 petabytes of structured data. Additionally, Caterpillar is employing AI in software for site scanning and digital twin generation in manufacturing to analyze operations, as well as in enterprise operations and software development for tasks such as modernizing legacy code and identifying software defects. However, Mineart emphasized that the deployment of AI extends beyond technology development, requiring companies to rethink workflows and train employees to work alongside autonomous systems.
