According to a statement from Finland’s defence forces, Sweden’s military will deploy Gripen fighter jets and a corvette warship to assist in the surveillance and protection of Finland’s territory, with this arrangement set to continue at least until the end of 2026. The Swedish equipment is expected to enhance air surveillance capabilities, thereby freeing up the Finnish Defence Forces’ own resources to address any violations or incidents that may arise.
Sweden’s Defence Minister, Pal Jonson, explained that this deployment is a response to Finland’s request to bolster its air defence in light of the deteriorating security situation. Under the agreement, the Swedish armed forces may, if necessary, assist Finland in repelling any violations of Finnish territory. In addition to fighter jets and vessels equipped with drone combat capabilities, Sweden may also provide ground-based anti-drone systems. This move comes amid growing concerns that the conflict in Ukraine is spilling over into NATO’s northern borders with Russia, as military drones straying into the airspace of Finland and other nearby NATO members have prompted security warnings.
