Iran has blacklisted 45 tankers for allegedly violating its rules governing transit through the Strait of Hormuz, according to an announcement by the Persian Gulf Strait Authority, a newly established Iranian body tasked with managing the strait. The authority warned that the listed vessels, which include very large crude carriers, liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas tankers, as well as clean product vessels, could face fines, detention, and confiscation of their cargoes. Furthermore, any ships engaging in ship-to-ship transfers with the blacklisted vessels may also be added to the list ¹.

The threat comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and the United States. The warning was issued shortly after the U.S. threatened Iran with “the toughest sanctions in history,” to which Iran responded that any new U.S. threats would elicit a “devastating” response. Among the named vessels are ships owned by the United Arab Emirates’ ADNOC Logistics and Shipping, ADNOC’s subsidiary Navig8 Tankers, Saudi Arabia’s national shipping carrier Bahri, as well as ships managed by Klaveness Ship Management, Stolt Tankers, and South Korea’s Sinokor. The Persian Gulf Strait Authority has instructed cargo owners to consult an updated list of non-compliant vessels for Gulf-related voyages and stated that ships seeking removal from the list must submit requests with explanations to Iranian maritime authorities ¹.
