Search teams have discovered the remains of American climber Mallory Geis, who died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan. Geis was the last missing member of a 10-member international mountaineering team that perished during the incident weeks ago. The discovery was made by local volunteers and confirmed by Irfan Arshad Khan, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan.

Geis, aged 39, hailed from San Antonio, Texas, where she had recently closed her Pilates studio to pursue a new adventure. She announced on social media that she would be embarking on an expedition to climb an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan. Her family remembered her as “a bright light who was loved deeply by her family and friends.”

The search for Geis began on July 31 after the team led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja was caught in an avalanche while climbing Broad Peak. Purja, a Nepal-born former British Army soldier known as Nims Dai, had previously climbed all of the world’s 14 highest peaks within 189 days in 2019, breaking his own record set in 2023. Climbing expeditions in northern Pakistan are often fraught with risks such as avalanches, falling ice and rock, high altitude, and rapidly changing weather conditions.
